AUDITORIUM PRESENTATION
Virtual Skills Lab: an Extensive e-Learning Tool for
Clinical Skills
Dr. Raphael Bonvin,
ABSTRACT:
Virtual Skills Lab
(VSL) is an interactive online learning tool for clinical skills that are part
of the core undergraduate medical curriculum. The content of VSL consists of
numerous structured high-quality movies that present all the skills in a
didactic step-by-step manner without loosing a clinically realistic view. The
first modules are patient-doctor communication, general examination,
cardio-vascular, respiratory, Ob-Gyn, musculoskeletal system, abdomen,
pediatrics, and neurology, HNO.
VSL is the
Swiss-army-knife for learning clinical skills. The modular organization of the
skills allows for a flexible integration into the various Swiss medical
curricula that range from traditional to PBL-type. VSL can be used as look-up
reference work, as an online tutorial preceding clinical or simulated
encounters or as a complement to a real skills lab. The program will be
available in three languages: English, French and German. It will be fully
implemented into the curriculum of all four participating Universities during
academic year 2004-05. VSL will be accessible to the Internet community at no
charge (http://www.virtualskillslab.net/).
Virtual Skills Lab is
the result of a collaborative work of four Swiss medical schools.
The development is
financially promoted by the Swiss Virtual Campus and all four partner
Universities. Project lead: University of Lausanne, Switzerland
