AUDITORIUM PRESENTATION
e-Learning and e-Testing with TeleTendo: Implementations for
Radiology

ABSTRACT:
Introduction
Many e-Learning and
e-Testing products already exist. With TeleTendo more possibilities ñ
especially in the case of testing and learning radiological skills, are
foreseen. TeleTendo is a reliable multi-media web based e-learning and
e-testing system developed at Ghent University in co-operation with RAMIT. As
in most systems, multiple choice, multiple select, text fields, and dropdown
questions are available. Images and other multimedia components however become
very important. For radiology a need for screen captures with polygons and zoom
function existed. This type of question especially tests the recognition and
interpretation skills of students.
Method
In October 2003 a
pre-test radiology was done with medical students from the second (N = 60),
third (N = 119) and fifth year (N = 85). Students were divided into groups of
about 20 students per group. Some groups did the test with a timer per
question, other groups with a timer per test and yet others had no timer at
all. The time after the pre-test and before the exams, students had an
opportunity to do e-learning with TeleTendo.
In addition, a trial exam was planned. In January 2004 students from the
above-mentioned years did the test (exam) again. In March 2004 students will
redo the test to see what the half-life is of what they have learned.
Results
Until now few results
are available. Students are tested now and in March they will be tested again.
The first results however indicate a very positive balance. The teacher has the
results immediately, students find this type of evaluation an honest one, and
the quality of images is very high. It was also very notable that students used
the e-learning system very often. The final results however will be shown at
the congress.
Discussion
The use of TeleTendo
is a great improvement for as well as the students as the teacher. Both the
e-testing module as the e-learning module evaluated positively. However, some
improvements have to be planned for the near future. The research activities
will continue to focus on e-Testing, security measures, the use of integrated
questions with intelligent navigation for on-line courses, extended feedback
options, meta-tagging combined with domain-dependent coding schemes (e.g. MESH
in the medical domain), and other multimedia question types (e.g. clickable
movies, Digital I-TV, NLP).
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
TeleTendo is an
initiative that addresses itself to e-Testing, e-Learning and Web Applications.
Using Internet technology TeleTendo ensures high quality and innovative
developments in e-Testing & e-Learning. As a result of concentrating on the
development of innovative e-Testing solutions for several years, TeleTendo can
provide a user-friendly, secure, web-based, multimedia, and domain-independent
e-Testing tool. The application can be used for 1) pretest, 2) e-Learning and
self-assessment (e-Testing + feedback = test-based learning), 3) examinations
and polls, 4) continuous progress follow-up, and 5) functional interpretation
of test results.
