ABSTRACT:
Developing
sophisticated 3D content for teaching is time consuming and can be very
expensive involving scientists and graphic designers. Integrating audio
comments adds to this effort involving professional recording people and actors.
Given the fact that there is a lot of very good multimedia content out there
that was developed for pharmaceutical companies, among others, our approach was
to focus on putting together a tutorial using material from an existing CD-ROM
production by Hoechst-Marion-Roussel. First we asked about the permission to
use the material for our intranet tutorial. Restricting the use of their
proprietary material exclusively on our Intranet solved copyright concerns. We
then extracted all media, movies, soundtracks and images,
cataloging and
arranging them according to our own needs. The focus shifted from one specific
pharmaceutical substance to demonstrating mechanisms of heart infarction and
some of the treatment options. The result is a web based tutorial using many
appealing 3D movies and professional audio comments that illustrate very
complex concepts in a way that would not have been possible with our own media
creating equipment and know-how.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
You learn how to
develop sophisticated multimedia content,
including
state-of-the-art visualization, movies, images etc. on a modest budget by
repurposing commercial material. View, side by side, the off-line CD-ROM
production we used and the resulting web-based tutorial. Various tools for
media extraction, cataloging and development will also be discussed and
demonstrated.
