DEMONSTRATION

Interactive Electronic Patients Promote Web-based Learning and Assessment

Frank Reilly, Edwin Allen, and Jeffrey Altemus West Virginia University School of Medicine, Morgantown, West Virginia, USA

ABSTRACT:

Electronic patients were developed to simulate the neurological component of the physical exam. Patients were loaded into a WebCT shell for online distribution to the full continuum of health professions. Integration with nine patient-based cases, five drill-and-practice games, and eight flash card units promotes retention and confidence among learners. Incorporation into examinations assesses knowledge acquisition and comprehension and measures content application and evaluation. The goal was to stimulate self-directed and problem-based learning. The rationale was to integrate related disciplines into a format that is readily accessible for local and distance learning and mastery of school of medicine competencies. The approach complements Web-based delivery of objective-driven and question-focused content on spinal and cranial nerves. It is organized around a series of eleven tutorials that use sound files and animated diagrams and images to facilitate active learning. Flash and Authorware target content areas dealing with applied human anatomy, embryology, physiology, pathology, and clinical tests/treatments.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION: We will demonstrate the utilization of internet/browser technology to present complex concepts on the peripheral nervous system. The courseware achieves a dimension that cannot be attained by using conventional textbooks, and it complements didactic and practical (dissection) activities in human anatomy. Anyone with an interest in medical educational software should benefit from this demonstration.
