ABSTRACT:

Basics in psychosomatic medicine are being taught in seminars, mainly by video demonstration of patients and discussion of theoretical background, therapeutic principles and physician-patient interaction. Our principle idea was to represent these contents in a CBT-program.

The web-based program contains brief but comprehensive chapters of theory, background of diseases and psychotherapeutic issues. Twenty cases of the most frequent psychosomatic diseases enable students to discover real patient's experiences, their family and social background as well as therapeutic recommendations.

Cases contain video clips of real patient interviews and simulate the circle of anamnestic (history taking) process. Questions to assess knowledge are spread throughout the program to support student's learning effectively and to maintain his attention.

Other features of the program include: An extra chapter of multiple choice questions taken from state examinations with online evaluation; a glossary linked to content; links from cases to theory and vice versa; tracking progress (you see what you did), and a site map (you see where you are).

The program has been integrated into the undergraduate curriculum and evaluations of students show that they like working with the program, because of its brevity and the didactically well presented content.

All content has been selected and written by three students getting their doctoral theses for this work.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

The authors have been fearless enough - or disrespectful? - to attempt to put knowledge and practices of psychosomatic medicine into CBT, in a discipline that is less concrete than other medical disciplines. They hope to have met the state of the art in some issues, e.g. the use of knowledge diagnostic elements, quiz and glossary. They hope, as well, to learn from discussions with participants, if they really did.
