POSTER
A Survival Guide for the Clinical Neurosciences
John D. Wells, MD
ABSTRACT:
Much of this
information site has been built in collaboration with its users, who are
residents and medical students actively learning the clinical neurosciences
including psychiatry, neurology, and neurosurgery. Its content has been
determined mainly by the learning needs which they themselves have perceived as
they have become active in clinical settings. Entries to this site by learners
have emphasized evidence evidence-based care, just-in-time learning, and
audiovisual presentation of relevant material. For instance, the site includes
short videos of examination and operation techniques, approaches to patients
with lesions in particular parts of the brain, notes to help manage problems
confronted on call such as seizures, the need to form unsafe psychiatric
patients, wand how to manage hyponatremia in neurosurgical cases. A section is
devoted to Computer Assisted Learning. Another lists
Local Resources to inform and treat neuroscience patients with disorders such
as Huntington Disease or epilepsy.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
The educational value
of a web site such as this one is two-fold: creation of its content gives
learners and supervisors opportunities to advance an individual's learning with
practical projects that demand accuracy, clarity, and some creativity. The
results tend to be highly valuable to colleagues who find themselves with
similar learning needs. Their preservation electronically in the Internet can
build confidence for learners who work hard to make such contributions. The
preparation and final results of such work allows learners and supervisors
opportunities for evaluation and collaboration that are pleasant and useful.
