CAMPUS: A Platform for Development of Multilingual Computer-Based Medical Teaching Cases

ABSTRACT:

CAMPUS (http://www.medicase.de/) is a case-based teaching and learning tool designed for application in different teaching and learning scenarios. The software can be used for self study, in small learning groups, PBL seminars, for case presentation as well as for case-based exams, so that case data can be reused for different purposes. Integration of case-data and textbook knowledge and case presentation in an situated, authentic, highly interactive learning environment are other key aspects of the CAMPUS-system.

The two main components of CAMPUS are the authoring-system (used by case-authors for creating and editing medical cases) and the player-component (used by students for case-simulation). Both are implemented in Java and can be used locally as standalone-application or over the Internet using a client-server architecture. CAMPUS-cases are structured according to a realistic case-simulation-model and are stored in a relational database, in XML files or serialized Java-Objects. Textbook knowledge can be integrated using XML-based knowledge sources that can be accessed on demand by learners in order to get at least enough background information to work through the case The software contains its own vocabulary for medical history, physical examination, technical examination and lab tests, and makes use of standard vocabularies like ICD-10 and MeSH. The vocabulary makes case creation easy and is a key factor for semantic interoperability with other systems.

At the moment vocabularies are available in German and English, so that cases can be created in different languages. New languages can be added easily, by translating the base vocabulary.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Participants will get an impression about the different application scenarios CAMPUS can be used in and how easy it is to create medical teaching cases in the CAMPUS-shell using standard vocabularies. The technical infrastructure of the CAMPUS software will be presented as well as the specifics for developing multilingual teaching cases and adding new languages to the system.
