PRE-WORKSHOP

MPEG-4, The Digital Video Standard

Eric Carlson, Paul E. Burrows

The University of Utah

ABSTRACT:

MPEG-4 has been billed as the new digital media standard that can deliver dynamic, interactive video, audio, and 3D content over the Internet. In addition, just as .wav audio files are universally recognized by players, the MPEG-4 standard promises to play anywhere. Although it promises these and other wonders, so far MPEG-4 has been used primarily to encode video. The presenters will begin an examination of MPEG-4 by looking at how the end user actually experiences digital video. They will discuss and demonstrate the differences between the major media players and their cross platform compatibilities. The presenters will then go on examine the MPEG-4 standard, what it is, how effective it is, and the exciting interactivity, which is embedded directly in an MPEG-4 stream.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Attendees will gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences between the new MPEG-4 standard and older, more familiar forms of digital video. If anyone wishes to find out what MPEG-4 is and how its unique features can be used, this session is a must.
