ABSTRACT:

Teaching Resource Centre: Strategies for integrating a new computer-based learning strategy throughout a medical school curriculum.

In this workshop, we will share our experiences of implementing pharmacology/pharmacotherapy teaching with help of computer-based technology (CBT) into the integrated medical school curriculum at Leiden University Medical School, the Netherlands. We will provide tips for a successful implementation by reviewing our developmental process of implementation and considering all important aspects in this project.

Background

With the onset of a new integrated medical school curriculum in Leiden in 1999, the plenary course of pharmacology had disappeared. In order to address a deficiency in clinical pharmacology education at Leiden University, a project has been started to implement this education throughout the curriculum. Because of the requirements for this new method of education (integration in established courses, integration with other basic disciplines, consistent presentation throughout the curriculum, self-study possibilities with feedback to the students), outcome-based computer active-learning programs and database programs were developed as learning strategies.

The learning strategies that are available now are: the TRC pharmacology database (http://coo.lumc.nl/TRC), the interactive TRC program (http://coo.lumc.nl/TRC/interactief) and self-study assignments on Internet for writing a therapeutic plan (ITEP).

The following topics will be discussed during the workshop: -

·        How to start

·        Steps for determining appropriate outcomes

·        Choosing a learning strategy

·        Educational support

·        Cooperation

·        Technical support

·        Integration in the electronic learning environment

·        Incorporating materials in established courses

·        Quality control

·        Determining the students learning progress

·        Monitoring how well you are doing

Who should attend?

This workshop can be useful for faculty, managers and CBT-developers who either want to implement a new computer-based teaching method into the curriculum, or those who wish to meet unfulfilled educational needs using self-study learning strategies. It does not matter whether you are already in the middle of such a process (and have problems or ideas to contribute) or you have plans/needs to start up a project like this.

Tutorial proposal for a half day

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Participants will be presented with our example of implementing pharmacology education at the Leiden medical school curriculum. The attendees will then have the opportunity to share their own problems and solutions as we discuss the topics outlined above in small workgroups. The workshop should provide the participants with several examples of real solutions to the problems often faced during the implementation of new educational methods in a curriculum.
