University Medical Center Nijmegen & UCLA, Los Angeles, California, USA

ABSTRACT:

In this workshop, we will discuss technical and non-technical issues related to implementing and maintaining an institutional multimedia database for health sciences education. Topics will include software architecture, server environment, authorization/authentication, as well as social and political issues such as quality assurance, patient confidentiality, and faculty participation. The instructors will present an institutional multimedia database based on HEAL, recently developed at the University Medical Center Nijmegen. Furthermore, we will provide information about an open-source project at the University of California. This collaborative project aims to develop a portable multimedia assets management system that can interoperate with HEAL and that is freely distributed upon completion.

Prerequisites:

An interest in implementing a multimedia database for the health sciences. No knowledge of database or Web programming software is assumed.

Audience: Beginner

Length: Half Day

Format: Lecture/demo

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

Participants will become familiar with the issues and obstacles related to implementing and maintaining a multimedia database. Participants will learn about appropriate software architectures needed to set up a multimedia database, issues to consider when cataloging resources, and how to overcome technical and political obstacles. In addition, they will learn how to implement a database that can be used for access to privately available local resources as well as publicly shared Web resources. Participants will find out how to participate in the open-source multimedia database project.
