ABSTRACT:
This pre-workshop is
a hands-on demonstration of how PDA technology can be easily integrated into
any curriculum. This is a full day workshop with 3 components. Up to 30 participants
can attend. Individuals with no experience using a PDA will benefit as much as
individuals who are experts in PDA usage. Each pair of participants will be
provided a Tungsten C PDA for use during the workshop.
The first part of the
workshop will provide an overview of how to choose a PDA based upon your needs
and how to identify software to use. Practical issues related to planning,
funding and the technical setup for developing a PDA class will be covered. The
first portion will conclude with an overview of how to use the basic software
that comes with the Palm device (including the date book, address book, beaming
capabilities and more) and how to install programs from a desktop computer onto
the PDA.
The second portion
will introduce the participants to several specific principles involved in
software evaluation. The participants will then evaluate the software using
pertinent examples. Participants will present their evaluation to the group
using the Margi Presenter software through the Tungsten C expansion slot.
The third portion
will be an introduction to the resources available on the WWW for PDA software.
Participants will identify, download, install and evaluate software. The day
will end with participants presenting the details of the software they
evaluated. This workshop will provide participants with the framework to
integrate PDA use into any curriculum. It will be fun and educational.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Participants
attending this pre-workshop will be provided a framework to integrate PDA
technology and use into any curriculum. Participants will be exposed to the
multiple steps necessary to achieve this goal including how to choose a
hand-held device, how to choose software, the basics functions of a PDA,
necessary components for evaluation of software, resources available for PDA
software and techniques to evaluate the utility of PDA software. The novice
will gain confidence and excitement about this powerful technology and the PDA
expert will be able to share their knowledge, skills and expertise to enhance
the value of the workshop.
