Creating and Publishing TK3 eBooks - A True Multimedia eBook

David A. Morton and Kenneth "Bo" Foreman

University of Utah School of Medicine

ABSTRACT:

Modern eBooks are more than just the display of static text and images of a paper book on a computer screen. Rather, eBooks have evolved to become much more through the incorporation of web-based media. Early eBook software such as Adobe eBook Reader fell short by failing to provide a robust authoring tool and providing an affordable means of reading. A true eBook tool should allow the author the resources to create an eBook using the multimedia dimensions the web provides yet allow the reader the ability to personalize the content. TK3 Author and TK3 Reader are the result of a true multimedia eBook tool. The software gives educators and students a multimedia tool for multimedia publishing on any personal computer platform.

TK3 eBook was first brought to Slice of Life by Andy Wasserman in 2003 (http://slice.gsm.com/2003/Sat_aud/Wasserman,_keynote.htm). TK3 Author (eBook authoring; Night Kitchen, NY; http://www.nightkitchen.com) is user friendly commercial software that enables the user to create and publish a multimedia eBook ($59.00/year or $149.00 for life). TK3 Reader is free-ware that enables the user to read a TK3 eBook. TK3 Reader possesses the strength of paper media by enabling the user to personalize content (mark pages, highlight text, record notes) while still allowing for the multimedia dimension possessed by the web (full color images, video, audio
