PRE-WORKSHOP
Implementing
Virtual Microscopy in Teaching Histology and Pathology

ABSTRACT:
Virtual microscopy is the
simulation of the experience of microscopy. Currently, this virtual experience
ranges from being able to move and magnify digital images to full interaction
with a digitized virtual slide, including not only being able to move about in
the slide and increase the magnification over a wide range, but also to focus
the specimen. The technology has
advanced rapidly in the past few years and now educators are seeking ways to
implement this new technology into effective instruction scenarios for teaching
histology and pathology. The highlight
of this workshop is the presentation of models of the use of virtual microscopy
in teaching. The examples have been
chosen to represent a spectrum of resources and approaches from costly to
inexpensive. The workshop will include
an overview of the field of virtual microscopy, an update of the current
technology for virtual microscopy, a presentation by faculty who have implemented virtual microscopy into the curriculum and
identification of issues related to implementing virtual microscopy. Examples
of virtual microscopy being implemented into a curriculum for teaching
histology and pathology that will be presented are:
Time will be allocated for
discussion following the presentations so that the attendees will have the
opportunity to refine their understanding of the examples given of
implementation of virtual microscopy and to examine as a group the pedagogical
value of virtual microscopy.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
Attendees will benefit by
learning the resources, methods and approaches in at different institutions
that were used to implement virtual microscopy into the teaching and learning
of histology and pathology. The
organizer of this pre-workshop also organized one of the first Symposia on
Virtual Slides in Teaching Research and Diagnosis, November 2002 held in
