ABSTRACT:
Understanding the emerging world of wireless options can be
daunting for even the best network engineers. Imagine the challenge of the
common mortals (educators and healthcare professionals) trying to contribute to
the thought process, add value and use the technology in the classroom. This
session will provide insight and explain the issues of
the various wireless options. This session will include a combination of:
PAN, LAN and WAN options
WiFi standards like 802.11a, b, g and the full alphabet soup of
evolving options
802.16 or WiMAX, UWB, ZigBee, and VoIP
Security considerations
Bluetooth, IR (Infrared) and Optical
In-building versus Cross Campus usage
Case studies, demos and usage in education and the healthcare
environment
When NOT to go wireless
Device selection and wireless integration issues
Prerequisites:
Participants should
have an interest in learning about the options for creating a mobile learning
environment. No technical knowledge assumed, but technical issues will be
explained and demonstrated.
Audience: Beginner
Length: Half Day
Format: Lecture/demo
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
If you are confused about this new technology and want to have a
baseline for discussion during the week this is the session for you. Participants
will learn and see the use of wireless technology in action. More importantly,
you’ll learn about the wireless options available now and evolving. You’ll
leave with the basic technical knowledge to assist with planning decisions for
your organization and lots of ideas for applications and integration into your
next generation eLearning environment. Some of the demos you’ll see include:
interactive simulation environments with the use of IR, the WiFi interactive
classroom, media streaming and wireless presentations and video from your cell
phone, Palm or Pocket PC.
