ABSTRACT

Francis Rabuck, President, Rabuck Associates, Philadelphia, PA, USA

For at least the last 20 years the training industry has had a fascination with creating applications that can recognize our voice commands and respond intelligently. What we got were dumb applications that responded like robots. Times are changing. Over the last few years, a significant amount of successful natural language speech applications have been deployed to replace old touch-tone voice response systems. This is a result of a move towards standards like VoiceXML and SALT, vast improvements in text-to-speech algorithms and intelligent approaches to building applications. Commercial applications in the healthcare environment include: Physician rating survey systems, Clinical Trials applications, Hospital Interactive Telephony and more. In this session, we’ll reveal the state of the industry in speech recognition, explain the architecture for applications, and discuss the potential for education applications. In the end, we hope to open your ears and your mind to the future of Interactive Voice applications.
