BREAKOUT SESSION

The Tablet PC and Digital Ink Technology as a Tool for Teaching, Learning, and Research

Heidi Nickisch Duggan, M.A., and Barry G. Timms, Ph.D. The University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion, South Dakota, USA

ABSTRACT:

This breakout session proposes to provide a forum for medical educators to gain a greater understanding of and to share their experiences with the Tablet PC and digital ink technology. Discussion will center on the use of the Tablet PC in a wireless environment, as a teaching and learning tool, and its use in the research environment.

The Tablet PC allows for annotations and drawings directly onto imported documents (Word, PowerPoint, etc.). These annotated documents can easily be saved as web archive files and read using a browser or viewed on a desktop PC using the free Windows Journal Viewer.

Microsoft OneNote, a note-taking and management program, is exceptionally well-suited for the Tablet PC; weíll discuss how it can benefit you and your students.

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

This session will provide participants with an introduction to the Tablet PC and digital ink technology, and an opportunity to discuss how this updated technology can be invaluable in teaching, learning, and research.
