AUDITORIUM PRESENTATION
The Use of TK3 eBook to Author and Distribute Anatomic
Content
David A. Morton, Ph.D., University of Utah, Salt Lake, City,

ABSTRACT:
Anatomists involved
in education are constantly looking for improved methods to author and
distribute anatomy content (e.g., text, images of prosections, bones,
radiographs, and illustrations) for students. Instructors provide study tools
for students by using a combination of paper and web-based media for lecture
outlines and study aids. Paper enables
students to personalize content by marking pages, recording notes, and
highlighting material. While paper
allows for personalization, it lacks interactivity and dimension. Using paper to distribute content limits
authors to black and white (unless expensive print in considered), lack of
animation and revision capabilities. In
contrast, the web allows authors to distribute content in full color and
possess unlimited revision capabilities.
However, the web does not provide students with a way to personalize the
content. We used the commercial software TK3 Author © and free software TK3
Reader© to benefit from the strengths of both paper and web based media to
author and use anatomic content.
TK3 Author© (an eBook
authoring program; Night Kitchen, NY; http://www.nightkitchen.com/)
enables the author to create and publish electronic books (eBooks). The author cannot only include text and full
color images but also sound, video and animation clips. Links within the eBook to external resources,
such as sites on the web can also be included.
The author has creative control over the layout of digital content
combined with the convenience of dynamic revision, without having to republish
the entire piece.
We conclude that TK3
Author and TK3 Reader provide for a positive authoring platform and
interactivity that shifts from the static environment of paper by including the
interactive features of the web and allowing personalization of content.
BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:
TK3 Author and TK3
Reader provide the anatomy instructor the power of combining the benefits of
paper and the web together in authoring and using course content. The
Pre-Workshop and Platform Presentation was designed to show instructors how to
create an eBook from beginning to end. This presentation is to demonstrate a
finished product. TK3 eBook software is
both inexpensive to purchase, and as easy to learn as Power Point. It empowers
the author with the ability to publish and distribute course material.
