ABSTRACT:

Textbooks can describe the pediatric neurological examination, but the use of QuickTime movies in an interactive web-based teaching tutorial allows the student to see the examination and at the same time be instructed in the skills and technique of the examination. In the web-based tutorial, NeuroLogic, we presented the adult neurological examination, which is the foundation examination for neurology. In this new site, PediNeuroLogic, the aspects of the neurological examination that are unique to infants and young children are presented. This tutorial allows the student to appreciate the neurodevelopmental approach that is essential to the pediatric neurological examination.

The tutorial has an introduction, developmental neuroanatomy section and then the examination of a newborn, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 30-month-old infants. The appropriate exam and the important neurodevelopmental milestones are demonstrated for each age. The newborn examination is accompanied by an abnormal neurological examination, which enables the student to contrast and compare the normal with the abnormal. There are over 150 movies in the tutorial with brief written commentary for each element of the examination.

The site is designed for ease of navigation and logical organization. The sequential ages and developmental stages of the infants examined give the student insight into the maturation of the brain and how development is expressed. At the end of the tutorial there is a quiz that allows the student to assess their mastery of the content. This tutorial is a resource that is designed to be used at multiple levels of medical education including undergraduate as well as postgraduate training in pediatrics and neurology. There is an x2 option for each movie for classroom projection. The movies can also be used for individual teaching purposes in a variety of educational settings where neurodevelopment is being taught. The website is open and movies can be used for educational purposes without permission. The URL for PediNeuroLogic is http://library.med.utah.edu/pedineurologicexam . The URL for NeuroLogic is http://library.med.utah.edu/neurologicexam .

BENEFIT TO PARTICIPANTS ATTENDING SESSION:

PediNeuroLogic is an interactive website for teaching the pediatric neurological examination. The site teaches neurodevelopment over the age span of the newborn to 2 Ω years. Examination techniques and skills as well as findings are demonstrated. The website is an open site and educators can repurpose the content of the tutorial to suit their educational and instructional designs and needs.
