SLICE OF LIFE VIDEODISC GIVEAWAY (ended June 2004):

The Slice of Project cleared its inventories of Slice of Life Videodiscs from January to June, 2004, during its "SLICE OF LIFE VIDEODISC GIVEAWAY."

The Giveaway ended in June 2004. There are no more 12-inch videodiscs to distribute; an era has come to a close.

We had a good run with the laser-vision 12-inch videodiscs from 1985 to 2005. Twenty years is a worthy record for the use of a technology. That said, this website still contains a great deal of information about the project and its databank of 44,000 images, mostly as an historical record for a far-reaching endeavor and an acknowledgement of Slice of Life's 250 contributors.

ABOUT THE GIVEAWAY (ended June 2004):

The Slice of Life Project cleared its remaining inventory of Slice of Life VI and VII Videodiscs in the first half of 2004. We distributed our remaining discs to individuals, medical students, medical schools, libraries or health care educational facilities for the cost of shipping & handling only.

No commercial publishers or re-distributors were eligible. Any re-sale of the videodiscs was strictly prohibited. Use of the videodisc for anything other than legitimate, non-commercial, educational use was strictly prohibited.

Our priority was to distribute our remaining videodiscs to existing customers and owners of any edition of the Slice of Life, followed by other interested parties.

An application form was required to qualify for the free videodiscs. Completed applications were reviewed by the producers of the Slice of Life.

A complete index that includes individual image descriptions and metadata for the image frames on the Slice of Life VI, Slice of Life VII, or Slice of Brain I videodisc was available on individual CD-ROMs in FileMaker Pro or ASCII text format (both Windows and Macintosh). The various Indexes were NOT part of the VIDEODISC GIVEAWAY.

RIGHTS & LIMITATIONS THAT WERE ASSOCIATED WITH THE VIDEODISC GIVEAWAY:

The Slice of Life Office and its producers have the right to limit the number of videodiscs distributed to eligible customers under this special Videodisc Inventory Clearance. We also maintain the right to refuse distribution to any party, at our discretion. Additionally, we may remove any product from the Inventory Clearance Availability at any time, at our discretion.

This special Inventory Clearance offer may be terminated at any time by the Slice of Life Office and its producers. No commercial publishers or re-distributors are eligible. Re-sale of the videodiscs is strictly prohibited. Use of the videodisc for anything other than legitimate, non-commercial, educational use is strictly prohibited.

All videodiscs distributed as part of this Inventory Clearance are in new, shrinkwrapped condition. However, all videodiscs are distributed "as is" with no further obligations on the part of the Slice of Life distribution office or the videodisc producers.

Eligibility for receiving videodiscs distributed through this Inventory Clearance is based on the completion and submission of the GIVEAWAY APPLICATION FORM to the Slice of Life producers. With approval by the Slice of Life producers, applicants will be notified by the Slice of Life distribution office regarding applicable shipping & handling fees and delivery instructions.

Once all videodiscs that are part of this Inventory Clearance are distributed, the GIVEAWAY will be immediately terminated. Videodiscs will be distributed up to and until all discs are gone. At that time, any outstanding or new GIVEAWAY APPLICATIONS will not and cannot be honored. No reorders of the videodiscs are possible in order to fill outstanding GIVEAWAY APPLICATIONS (there are no more videodisc replication facilities in the United States).

The use of and availability of laservision videodisc players (NTSC TV format) are not the responsibility of the Slice of Life producers or the University of Utah, who have no obligations in this matter (see ABOUT VIDEODISC PLAYERS and HOW CAN I BUY A VIDEODISC PLAYER/REMOTE CONTROLLER TODAY? below for possible options in acquiring laservision videodisc players).

HOW CAN I BUY A VIDEODISC PLAYER/REMOTE CONTROLLER TODAY?

You won't find a laservision videodisc player in your neighborhood Best Buy, Fry's, or electronics store. The technology has been replaced by DVD-Videodisc players (at least for movies). Some fans of Slice of Life report that eBay has been a good source for used or like-new videodisc players. Pioneer still sells industrial grade players, usually through Prosumer AV dealers. Consult the Pioneer Electronics website for more information about videodisc players. In Salt Lake City, vendors still offering videodisc players or able to order professional-grade players include:
