Student Software Awards

SLICE OF LIFE WORKSHOPS & THE STUDENT SOFTWARE AWARDS:

Time after time, the Slice of Life Project discovered that it was the medical students themselves who designed and wrote some of the most innovative software for medical education, often exploiting the images from the Slice of Life Videodiscs, and more recently building applications, tutorials, and references delivered with new media technologies.

For numerous years, in conjunction with the annual Slice of Life Workshops, medical students were encouraged to submit to a panel of judges their recent work in building software for medical education. From the applicants, a winner was announced on the final day of the Slice of Life Workshop, gaining the recognition of his/her peers, colleagues, and faculty. The prize of US $1000 was awarded.

We are attempting to retrieve from records and archived conference programs a comprehensive list of the winners of each Student Software Award. If you received an award or know of a medical student who did, please contact us and refresh our collective memories. We will add your honor to the list of recipients shown below.

Pieter Kubben; "Mobile Electronic Notebook & Mobile Electronic Logbook"

• Recipient update since the Award...
  • In 2006, Pieter Kubben presented a poster and led a pre-conference workshop on cross-platform PDA programming of medical decision trees.
  • Then, building further on the award-winning techniques, he developed
    NeuroWiki.com , a framework for collaborative mobile content distribution.
  • After an oral presentation on the International Conference on Interactive Mobile and Computer Aided Learning , he published a paper on this technique in the International Journal of Interactive Mobile Technologies; http://online-journals.org/i-jim/issue/view/1
  • Currently he is developing in Adobe Flex and ActionScript for Rich Internet Applications, and in the iPhone SDK for mobile applications.
  • Pieter Kubben is a full time resident in neurosurgery at the Maastricht University Medical Center, The Netherlands. He is performing a PhD project on intraoperative MRI for the treatment of malignant brain tumors, and is a free time programmer for medical applications.
