WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM (WIC):

 
Fact Sheet
  1. The only US federal food program that provides specific, nutritious food and nutrition education as an adjunct to good health care.

  2. Funded by the United States Congress as a two year pilot project in 1972 based on research conducted in the 1960's and early 1970's indicating that many women, infants, and young children were lacking vital nutrients. Since then, authorized as an on-going program

  3. A supplemental feeding program for pregnant and nursing mothers (up to 12 months postpartum), other postpartum women for 6 months, and infants from birth to 5 years of age.

  4. Administered by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USD.A) with funds to each state. In Utah, administered by the Division of Family Health Services of the Utah State Dept. of Health. Designed to serve as an adjunct to the health care system. While usually administered by city or county health depts it may also be operated by any of a variety of public or private non-profit or health service connected agencies.

  5. Serves over 3 million participants nationally each month.

  6. Eligibility is based on income level (at or below 185% of the current year's poverty guideline), and nutritional risk status.

  7. Participants receive monthly vouchers to spend at the store for specified food items prescribed on an individual basis. For example, pregnant women receive milk, eggs, cheese, juice and cereal monthly and alternate peanut butter and beans monthly.

  8. Participants must be certified by a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) i.e. physician, nurse, nutritionist, etc.) Certification is done once for the pregnancy and once postpartum, then every six months thereafter.
