Tutorial 5: Global Issues: social, political and economic factors affecting adequate maternal and child nutrition


Purpose:

  To enable vulnerable women and their families to achieve adequate nutrition through health care provider identification and use of health policies and objectives, health system referrals, legislative and political advocacy, as well as individual actions to reduce clients' personal, social and educational barriers.

Objectives for an informed professional:

 
  1. Recognizes the key barriers influencing achievement of adequate nutrition.

  2. Identifies selected research and statistical data used to track nutrition status and hunger/malnutrition issues in various geographic settings.

  3. Identifies WHO and USA nutrition policy objectives for Healthy People 2000.

  4. Knows food and nutrition resources available in their community and how to facilitate client's access.
