Digital Publishing oversees numerous digital collections, education initiatives, open-access publications, and exhibitions, both physical and virtual, across all health disciplines.
The mission of EHSL Digital Publishing unit is to contribute to research, scholarship, and the common good by collaboratively collecting, organizing, preserving, communicating, and sharing digital objects relevant to the health sciences community and professional healthcare educators worldwide.
The EHSL Digital Publishing unit seeks to be a catalyst for collaborative solutions providing a creative and customized environment for publishing, sharing, and preserving the emerging forms of research, teaching, and learning from the scholarly community in the health science disciplines.
One of Digital Publishing’s major projects is the Neuro-Ophthalmology Virtual Education Library (NOVEL) NOVEL is a discipline-specific, open access repository of digital materials; images, video, lectures, articles and animations; to be used for educational and research purposes by health care professionals, educators, patients, and students.
NOVEL is a collaborative project between the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, University of Utah, and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS), a professional organization of nearly 900 members who are fully trained ophthalmologists or neurologists. NANOS seeks to promote the field of neuro-ophthalmology by supporting all forms of education, encouraging research, fostering clinical expertise and maintaining cordial exchanges.
The NANOS Illustrated Curriculum developed with NOVEL materials in conjunction with NANOS, is the official curriculum of accredited neuro-ophthalmology programs in North America. The NANOS Neuro-Ophthalmology Techniques of Examination is designed to teach, and improve implementation of basic neuro-ophthalmic examination techniques and increase confidence in practitioners who use these skills to evaluate patients with visual and neurological complaints.
NOVEL has a global impact, with over half a million collection views and half a million website visits from 154 countries annually.
