A heartfelt and deeply personal memoir from the screenwriter of Oscar-winning film, Milk. Dustin Lance Black is an LGBT activist, but he grew up in a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas.

His mother suffered with Polio from a very young age and was told she would never be able to have children. Escaping two abusive relationships, she found herself working in U.S. civil service, in a happy marriage, and with three children.

When Black came out to his mother in his early twenties, he was met with an adverse reaction. His memoir depicts the effort it took to remain a family despite this divide.

Born Both: An Intersex Life – Hida Viloria | Memoir

Hida Viloria was raised as a girl and from a young age knew their body was different. It wasn’t until they were in their twenties that they learned the term “intersex” from a newspaper article. Their memoir explores the years they tried living as a feminine woman, an androgynous person, and even for a brief period, as a man. They explain the ways in which their gender fluidity was both exciting and isolating.
