WHAT IS THE " SLICE OF LIFE" WORKSHOPThe group began as users of the "Slice of Life" Videodisc. We like the name, we still use the resource to grab images! For the past ten years developers of medical multimedia (and interested new-comers) get together to:
2.Demo new multimedia teaching programs they've made/bought/sell. 3.Share innovations for the WWW, distance ed, and asynchronous learning. 4.Attend demonstrations or hands-on "Pre-Conference" Workshops 5.Acknowledge and encourage student participation with the award of a $1000.00 cash prize for the most outstanding student project 6.Demonstrate the tools, programs and projects they have been working on. 7.Discuss strategies for getting new technologies incorporated into the curriculum. 8.Share software and ideas, problems and solutions. 9. Share evaluation data. 10. Meet others with similar interests with whom they can network throughout the year.
WHAT IS THE COMPUTERS IN HEALTHCARE EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM?For ten years Thomas Jefferson University hosted a spring symposium sponsored by the Health Sciences Library Consortium and Commercial Vendors such as Apple and IBM. The last symposium at TJU was in April, 1997. Beginning with June, 1998 TJU and the organizers of the Slice of Life Workshop decided to combine the meetings. The program from the Tampa meeting provides a glimpse of the types of activities and presentations last year. This is one of the few places where developers and evaluators of computer assisted learning in healthcare gather to network and share ideas. The workshop is deliberately limited.
WHAT IS GRIPE?The Group for Research in Pathology Education has a long and colorful history. You can learn more about them at http://osu.com.okstate.edu/gripe/index.html WHO ARE THE KNOWLEDGE WEAVERS?Sharon Dennis at the University of Utah Eccles Health Sciences Library has for the past 3 years continued the tradition of sharing initiated with the Slice of Life Project. With a grant from NLM many projects have been undertaken for educational use by anyone. They have been involved for the past two years in producing some of the pre-conference workshops. Learn more about them at the Knowledge Weavers website. WHY IS GOLD STANDARD MULTIMEDIA HOSTING THE WEB SITE AND HANDLING THE REGISTRATION?In 1997 Suzanne Stensass was about to say "no more Slices of Life". It took too much time and energy. Marianne Messer and others from Gold Standard Multimedia were at this Chicago meeting and found it so exciting that they said, "we could help you do this in Tampa in 1998". Last year's collaboration was so successful that now that they know how to do it we decided to let the "pros" continue to mount the web site and handle the registration and many of the logistics. We feel very fortunate to have collaborators who, incidentally also happen to be software vendors! This meeting is not designed to push their products, but they will be more than happy to show them to you and explain their value.

ABOUT THE 1999 CONFERENCEThe production of this year's workshop is a collaboration between the University of Utah (home of Slice of Life and the Knowledge Weavers), Thomas Jefferson University, the Group for Research Pathology Education (G.R.I.P.E.), and Gold Standard Multimedia. You will not want to miss it! The GRIPE meeting is being organized by the GRIPE central office and the TJU Department of Pathology with Bruce Fenderson, the local host. Their meeting is designed to dovetail with ours and thus permit their members to participate in both meetings and pre-conference workshops.
