Finding Library Materials

  • The Online Catalog (Horizon) is a computerized database of materials - print, electronic or multimedia - owned by the Eccles Library. It contains records of books, journal titles, audiovisuals, theses, reserve items, government documents and multimedia located at the Eccles Library, the Hope Fox Eccles Clinical Library, and libraries which are members of the Utah Health Sciences Library Consortium (UHSLC). The catalog also contains records and links to the Multimedia Collection of digital graphics developed by the Knowledge Weavers at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library as part of a National Library of Medicine grant. Location and availability of items is included in each record. Online help is available.

The Online Catalog features the following: links to full text journals the library subscribes to, links to multimedia resources, and a form for recommending new book or journal titles for purchase by the library. Your feedback about the features available via the web-based catalog are welcome. Contact joang@lib.med.utah.edu with your comments and suggestions. More Library Catalogs...

The Library includes three levels. Public restrooms are located on the 1st and 3rd levels. The 3rd floor (upper level) houses all the books. Books are shelved alphanumerically by a call number. (The Online Catalog reveals what we own, as well as the call number.) The entrance and exit to the building is on west side of the 2nd floor (main level.) Also on the 2nd floor are the Administrative offices and the Public Service areas of Duplication, Circulation (check out or return items,) Reserve, Interlibrary Loans & Document Delivery, and Reference, as well as the current 6 years of journals - most current, unbound journals are shelved on the west side, bound journals are on the east side. We shelve journals alphabetically by their title - no call number for journals. The 1st floor (lower level) houses the older journals. Once again, they are shelved alphabetical by the journal title. Public use computers are located on the 1st and 2nd levels.

  • In addition to the Online Catalog, the Library's website at http://library.med.utah.edu is updated, at the least, weekly with notes about current library & health sciences news & events, as well as links to a variety of library services and a multitude of electronic resources. Some resources are subscription based and are limited to University of Utah users. Others link to freely accessible resources. The left menu includes the main categories of the website. They include Search, Library Catalogs, Electronic Resources, Education Materials, Subject Links, Services and About Us. One can either click on the category name to display that specific web page, or utilize the menu that pops up as you move the mouse over the category name. The top navigation bar includes links to the Site Map, FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions,) Personalize Eccles (a choice to customize our website to display your selections,) Contact Us, and Quick Links (a short list of commonly used links.)
