Although Eccles Health Sciences Library is open to the general public, borrowers must have a current University of Utah ID card or a Library Permit purchased for $50.00 a year ($15.00 per quarter). Utah health professionals may purchase a permit for $25.00. Utah colleges and universities, as well as major Utah hospitals have a reciprocal borrowing agreement for books only. Circulation is located on the main level near the entrance to the building.

Computers and Media 801-581-8052
In addition to the two computer labs on the lower level which are available for faculty, student, and staff use, several more PC computers are on located on the main and lower levels. Macintosh computers can be found on the lower level. Wireless Internet accessis available to current Univeristy of Utah affiliates, either by checking out a wireless network card for a personal laptop, or by checking out one of the library's laptops with a wireless card. Computer programs are generally available on all computers. However, a few programs, (such as SPSS and EndNote) require a disk checkout from the Public Services desk on the main level. Eccles Library has a circulating collection of over 1200 audiovisual titles, which are also available from the Public Serives desk on the main level. A variety of Workshops and Classes are offered at minimal to no fee.

Located on the main level, Duplication offers photocopier services and locker rental. Self-service copying is 10 cents/page. Ucard payment is 8 cents/page. A microfiche-microfilm reader-printer (copies free for fiche/film Eccles Library owns), transparencies, and color paper are also available. Computer disks are avaiable for purchase.

Classes for faculty, staff, students and others are offered in database searching, full text databases, consumer and business resources, Internet resources, HTML, reprint file management, presentation software (PowerPoint) and more. The List of Library Classes is updated every semester.
On-demand classes can be scheduled by contacting the instructor or Education Services librarian.
University faculty are encouraged to consider integrating library classes into their course content. Library faculty are willing to develop and teach classes that meet specific information needs and will respond to requests for instruction on a specific resource.

Books, journal articles and audiovisuals not at the Eccles Library may be borrowed on interlibrary loan from other libraries. Items the library does own are considered Document Delivery. Arrival time is dependent on delivery mode (fax, U.S. mail, electronic) and availablity at other libraries. Document delivery to entities outside the United States is available through the library's International Document Delivery Services. All loans are subject to a fee and U.S. Copyright law. Rush service is available at additional cost. See the Interlibrary Loan web page for a schedule of fees and services, links to book and journal request forms, and Loansome Doc registration forms. Fax or telefacsimile transmission of articles and personal documents to and from other Telefax machines throughout the world is available. The library's fax number is 801-581-3632. The Knowledge Weavers, funded by the National Library of Medicine, offer multimedia services to health sciences faculty, and create innovative multimedia resources to support health sciences education.

The Outreach Librarian brings classes and library services on-site to distance learning students enrolled in health professions programs in Utah, and health care professionals in rural areas of the state who are not affiliated with a health sciences library.

Services include in-person, telephone, and email assistance with reference questions, free access to MEDLINE and other databases, individual and group orientations, and fee-based online database searches. Classes are offered in reprint file management, online searching using database such as PubMed MEDLINE, CINAHL or SciFinder, and Powerpoint (presentation software.) The Reference collection is located on the main level, and is shelved in 17 broad subject areas such as Drugs, Dictionaries, Biographies, Education, Statistics, etc.
Technical Services
Ordering and subscribing to library resources, cataloging all materials regardless of format (print, electronic, multimedia) into the online catalog, serials processing, bindery and repair are the primary functions of the Technical Services department.
Video Resources
The goal of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library is to provide effective and efficient access to information to all Health Sciences students at their location and at their convenience. As higher education becomes increasingly complex and flexible, the demands for remote access and electronic delivery increase. The library maintains a digital video studio with equipment for capturing, editing, managing and distributing a video library that will provide both live and stored video content. The main purpose of this facility is to provide opportunities for faculty to
create educational opportunities in digital video format.

The University of Utah community can connect laptops or PDAs, with internal or external wireless cards, to the University's Wireless Network by logging in with your current UNID and password via either:
uconnect.utah.edu -- a secure, encrypted connection. Log in with your campus uNID or guest gNID. |
- Install the uconnect wireless client for new install or previous install of secure.utah.edu client.-- Make sure to select the wireless client for your OS, operating system.
- Once installed, select "uconnect.utah.edu" when you "View Available Wireless Networks" from "Wireless Network Connections" (located in bottom taskbar or under "Settings" in the "Start Menu.")

PDAs (Palm or PocketPC):
- Most wireless devices can connect to "hotspot.utah.edu" via their Wi-Fi setup. Launch browser to login. No credentials to log in. Unsecure.
- PocketPC can use the secure Uconnect Network. Requires client installation and uNID account.

is currently not available.
Laptops, when not in use for wireless classroom instruction, are available for checkout to the University of Utah community at the Public Services Desk (phones: 581-5534 or 581-8772) on main floor of the library.
Wireless cards for laptops are also available for checkout to the University of Utah community. Laptops with MAC or WindowsXP or Windows2000 operating systems usually do not require software installation. Earlier versions of Windows OS may require a one-time software installation for the wireless card. Assistance and installation CDs are available at the Public Services Desk (phones: 581-5534 or 581-8772) on main floor of the library.

Branch Library in the University Hospital 801-581-4686
The Hope Fox Eccles Clinical Library (Room 4037, University Hospital) functions as a branch of the Eccles Health Sciences Library. The collection of books and the most current four years of clinical journals does not circulate but is accessible to Health Sciences Center affiliates 24 hours a day. Photocopying equipment, laser printer, four computer workstations with access to popular software applications, MEDLINE, and the Internet are available. The General Surgery Division provides another PC with a genral surgery instructional program. In addition, Safety-CAT resides on another computer in the Clinical Library and contains mandatory safety update modules for hospital personnel.
Patient care literature searches for Health Sciences Center staff are performed free of charge by the Clinical Librarian.
The Clinical Library is staffed daily from 6:00 A.M. to Midnight. Authorized Health Sciences Center persons may contact Hospital Security (801-581-2294 or 801-581-2295) for admission after staff hours.
Government Documents
An active member of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) since 1970, Eccles Library has a collection of medical and health sciences federal government documents. In addition, we do have some Utah Department of Health documents; however, the two other libraries on campus, Marriott and Quinney Law are designated state government document libraries.
Most government documents can be fournd in our Library Catalog. However, for pre-1990 documents, the library's MEDOC index can be consulted. Many federal and state documents are available online. Additionally, you can find government information via our Government Documents, Agencies & Databases page. The Government Documents collection is located on the main level (2nd floor.) Don't hesitate to ask our Reference staff for assistance.
History of Medicine
Materials on the History of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy are part of the general collection and may be found on the upper level, mostly under the classification WZ. A few early editions and out-of-print books are located in the History of Medicine Room. Materials from the History of Medicine Room do not circulate but are available for use in the Eccles Library and may be requested at the Services Desk on the main level. Items in the History of Medicine collection can be found by searching our Library Catalog.
Digital Collections & Multimedia
Reserve 801-581-8772
- The Open Reserve collection is located opposite the Duplication Room on the main level. It contains current editions of textbooks which are heavily used or which have been placed on reserve by faculty. Items from Open Reserve have no time-use limit, and are shelved by call number.
- Closed Reserve materials are located behind the "Reserve" section of the Services Desk on the main level. Books, readings, and tests are placed here by faculty for a specific class. A University of Utah ID card is required for a 2-hour use limit in the library. Closed Reserve is arranged by course name and number, with books arranged alphabetical by the title.
- An Electronic Reserve service is also available for student and faculty use.
