After this workshop, participant will be able to get started with creating SMIL multimedia presentations. A syllabus with the exercises and resources will be handed out. Synopsis: Recently, Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) was endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium to build rich synchronized multimedia for the web. SMIL is a surprisingly simple, HTML-like language that enables the synchronization of video, audio, text, images, and Flash animations. Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn the basic syntax of SMIL 1.0, will create simple SMIL presentations for a basic science course and will learn what the supported multimedia formats are. We will do a number of exercises that will lead to a SMIL presentation that synchronizes video with images. Also, the limitations of SMIL and the soon-to-be-released version of SMIL 2.0 will be discussed.
