• FRIDAY AUDITORIUM •

JUNE 27, 2003

MANDELL THEATRE, DREXEL UNIVERSITY

Theme:  This morning's focus will be on the use of computers to present clinical cases.  Our Keynote speaker, Dr. Mumenthaler, and his young collaborator, Dr. Daetwyler will demonstrate the approach they use when presenting clinical cases in Headache and Neurology. Not only do we examine the role of the good mentor in patient interactions, but we raise the question of whether computers can model preferred behavior and affect attitudes.

We are ambivalent.  We do not want to standardize on one case format, nor do we want reinvent the wheel.  We do want to see the variety of approaches to presenting real and simulated patients in a variety of settings during both basic science PBL and  clinical clerkships.  There are many submissions each year in this area and this year we have selected one from Germany and one from the USA.  Even more difficult, but necessary, we need to evaluate our materials under different conditions and in different settings.  The collaboration between universities in Holland has given us some preliminary information about using computer simulations to enhance communication skills.  As developers realize, beginning with Hurley Myers in the dark ages of the 80's and his project now known as Diagnostic Reasoning, we can't do it alone, because cases are difficult to build and take lots of time.  Thus, we spotlight two examples, again from Europe and the USA, of collaboration among clerkship directors or universities to encourage sharing and co-development. These presentations should generate interest and discussion that can carry forward into the breakout sessions.
