“I was just a shepherd boy,” was how Dr. Reed Gardner, in typically modest fashion, described his youth in rural southern Utah. Growing up in St. George, the son of a sheep rancher, Dr. Gardner learned the value of self-reliance, perseverance, and ingenuity. Dr. Gardner’s academic career began ordinarily enough with a degree awarded to him by the University of Utah in electrical engineering in 1960.

Surgeon, teacher, dean, humanitarian – Philip Price is rightly remembered as the Founding Father of the modern-day School of Medicine. Dr. Price came to the University of Utah in 1943 to oversee the establishment of the four-year program as Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Salt Lake County General Hospital.

The libraries have been using a fleet of over 40 3D printers, with more than a dozen donated from Salt Lake County Libraries, to print Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the University of Utah hospital. The Center for Medical Innovation and the Library recently partnered to 3D print parts for a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) system they created.
