Prepare yourself
for a full day of festivities with this year's Dutch Grand Extravaganza!
While this excursion is separate and touristy it is really an integral
part of the workshop. In an informal atmosphere we continue to network
and process information from the past week. Many new collaborations
and projects have come about while on the Grand Extravaganza. So,
do give it priority and plan to depart Leiden on Sunday in order to
attend this event. Don't be disappointed! Sign up when you register
as 100 attendees is the limit.
Grand Extravaganza Details:
We will depart from Leiden University
at 12:30 by bus headed to Alphen aan den Rijn. A box lunch will be
provided on the bus. We will arrive in Alphen aan den Rijn at 13:00
and will be dropped off at the famous bird park Avifauna.
This bird park is one of the best in the world with birds from all
continents.
13:00 - 14:45
hours: Everyone will be divided into two groups, Group A and Group
B. Group A goes by boat, a historic wooden Dutch steamer de Lelie,
to see the countryside, to Heijmans Wetering, Braassemermeer and de
Wijde Aa. Drinks will be served on board (at your own expense). Group
B visits the bird park (inside/outside) where more than 3,000 different
birds from all over the world can be seen.
15:00 - 16:45
hours: rotation of Group A and Group B (same program)
At 17:00 we will
depart by bus from the bird park. You will then be transported to
the theme park Archeon
also located in Alphen aan den Rijn. In this park, Prehistoric, Roman
and Medieval times from Dutch history are brought to life again. A
guided tour and activities will be provided for the Middle Ages period.
At approximately 19:00 we will go to a monastery in the 14th century
town of Gravendam. A buffet feast complete with some traditional medieval
wine will begin at 19:30. You will be entertained by medieval musicians
(a troubadour) during dinner.
After dinner,
we will depart for Leiden by bus at approximately 22:30. It should
take approximately 30 minutes to return to Leiden, so expect to arrive
back by 23:00.
